This Tuesday (02), Neil Young and Billy Joel paid tribute to Gordon Lightfoot. In the aftermath of the composer’s death, many of his relatives mobilized to praise his discography. Bryan Adams called him “one of the pioneers of the Folk-Pop sound of the 1960s and 1970s”. He was adored by music legends including Bob Dylan, and his songs were brought to life by Elvis Presley and Barbra Streisand.

Lightfoot died at the age of 84 in a Toronto hospital. This came after a deterioration in health, which had caused him to halt his tour three weeks earlier. However, the cause of his death was not given.

“Gordon was a great Canadian artist. An unparalleled composer, his melodies and lyrics have inspired all writers who have heard his music, as they will continue to do through the ages. There is a unique and wonderful feel to Gordon’s music. Lightfoot is a Canadian legend,” Young wrote on his website. In 2014, the artist recorded two Lightfoot covers on his Folk and Lo-fi covers album, “A letter home”: “Early morning rain” It is “If you could read my mind”.

Billy Joel, seated on a black grand piano, recorded a cover of “If you could read my mindand posted on their networks. He wrote: “Sad morning here. Rest in peace Gordon Lightfoot. So sad to hear of the passing of Gordon Lightfoot. He’s a musician I’ve listened to all my life…”. This song that the singer of “come” chose, was heavily re-recorded. There are versions made by artists like Johnny Cash, Olivia Newton-John, Viola Willis, stars out of 54 It is Duane Steele.
