The 2023 Mining Bulletin, published by the Fundação Amazônia de Amparo a Estudos e Pesquisas (Fasepa), reinforces the importance of mining production for Brazil, with Minas Gerais, Pará and Mato Grosso do Sul being the three largest producers of the national segment.
In 2022, Brazilian mineral production brought in around 250 billion reais, according to a survey by Brasil Mineral magazine. The 200 largest companies in the mining sector accounted for 86.1% of this total value, which corresponds to 215.7 billion reais. Together, these companies collected 6.512 billion reais in financial contribution for mining (Cfem) from public coffers.
When it comes to mineral commodities, iron ore companies lead the valuation rankings. The top four (Vale, Mineração Brasieliras Reunidas, Anglo American, CSN Mineração), for example, represent 53.5% of the total value generated by the segment.
The largest producing states
Minas Gerais it ranks first as Brazil’s mining state, owning 40 of Brazil’s 100 largest extractive mines. In the south-central region of Minas Gerais is the Iron Quadrangle., whose main minerals are gold, manganese and iron.
Second place is the state of Pará, with a focus on the regions of Serra de Carajás and Oriximiná. They are home to the largest explored iron ore deposit in the world. In addition, there are significant reserves of manganese, copper, bauxite, gold, nickel, tin and other ores.
According to the Mining Bulletin 2024, the state stands out as the second state with the greatest mining production in Brazil. The study highlights the importance of Pará’s mining production on the national scene over the last decade.
Pará is one of the largest mining provinces in the world with a wealth and diversity of minerals such as bauxite, copper, iron, kaolin, gold, nickel, manganese and limestone, which attract significant investments, contributing positively to the generation of jobs and income. , improves social problems and stimulates the state’s economy.
According to the National Mining Agency (ANM), the state has maintained a Brazilian participation above 20% and achieved the second highest mineral export value, with 15 billion US dollars, favoring the trade balance and l increase in gross domestic product (GDP). .
One of the future mining projects in Pará is the Volta Grande Project (PVG), of Belo Sun Mineração, a subsidiary of the Canadian company Belo Sun Mining Corp., located in the municipality of Senador José Porfírio.
It aims to set up a mine and industrial processing plant to extract 60 tonnes of gold in the Xingu region, over a period of 12 years, with the possibility of extending this period due to the great mineral potential of the region.
And Mato Grosso do Sul is the third state that produces the most ore in Brazil, with distinction for the Maciço do Urucum region, located south of the municipality of Corumbá – responsible for much of Brazil’s mineral production. iron and manganese ore. , contributing approximately 22% of the national generation.
