Canada, Costa Rica, USA and Jamaica face off in CWC semi-finals

The group stage of the Concacaf Women’s Championship, which took place in Monterrey, Mexico, ended yesterday (11/07) and the favorites have qualified for the next stage.

Canada beat Costa Rica 2-0 in a match at BBVA Stadium. Meanwhile, at the Estadio Universitario, Panama won their victory against Trinidad and Tobago by 1-0.

Later, the Jamaicans took to the field at BBVA Stadium to beat the Haitians 4-0. Meanwhile, the Americans beat the hosts 1-0.

Both teams came to this match already qualified for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will be played in Australia/New Zealand, however, the first place in the group was up for grabs.

The first Canadian goal came at 5′, when Jessie Fleming completed a nice pass from Nichelle Prince.

The second goal came in the 70′, when Sophie Schmidt, who had been substituted a few minutes earlier, worked well with Adriana Leon and shot straight into the goal.

Marta Cox was the heroine for Canaleras at the Estadio Universitario, scoring a goal late in the first half to hand the three precious points to Panama, who, by finishing third, will have a second chance to qualify for the World Cup.

The goal came before the break and slipped out of Cox’s boot in the 43rd minute when he received a pass from Lineth Cedeno, evaded a defender and scored for Panama.

This match was Jamaica’s first CWC victory against Haiti in three attempts. Moreover, with this result, Jamaica has earned its place for the world championship in Australia/New Zealand. It is the second time in a row that the Jamaicans have qualified for the championship, and also the second time in history that a team from the Caribbean will participate in a Women’s World Cup.

Jamaica opened the scoring with fine work from Khadija Shaw to Trudi Carter, whose right kick left the Haitian keeper with no way out.

Haiti kept moving forward looking for a goal but eventually gave space to the Jamaican attack and Shaw took advantage, delivering a right kick to double Jamaica’s lead to 2 -0 at the 58th minute.

At 70′, a Haitian played with her hand on the ball and gave the Reggae Girlz a penalty. Shaw took the opportunity to score his second goal of the game.

To end the evening as if by magic, Drew Spence scored the fourth goal with a header at 79′.

The Americans finished the group stage by confirming their first place in the standings, in a balanced game.

The match was busier in the second half. At 73′, after a VAR review, Jaqueline Ovalle’s tackle on Rose Lavelle ended in a red card, leaving the Mexican team with 10 players on the field.

The reigning world champions finally opened the scoring in the 90′, when Kristie Mewis crossed the line after an argument in front of goal, making it the CWC’s first victory for the USA against Mexico on the floor. Mexican.

Next steps

Costa Rica and Canada will play the semi-finals this weekend, ready to fight for a place in the final of this edition of the CWC in Monterrey. While the United States will face Costa Rica.

Haiti and Panama have qualified for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers. The 10-team inter-confederate qualifiers will take place in February next year.

Mexico, with this result, completed its participation in Monterrey without qualifying for the Cup.
