Canada’s squad returns to World Cup after 36 years – 28/03/2022

ROME, MARCH 28 (ANSA) – Having a good time in the Concacaf Qualifiers, Canada beat Jamaica 4-0 last Sunday (27) and guaranteed their return to the World Cup after 36 years.

Victory in Toronto took Canada to 28 points from 13 games played in the competition, and could no longer be matched by fifth-placed Panama.

The only time the Canadian team played in a World Cup was in 1986, in Mexico. On the occasion, the country closed the competition in last position in Group C, losing all three matches to the Soviet Union, France and Hungary.

The rising generation of Canadian football is led by Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies. Besides him, the team led by Englishman John Herdman also includes striker Jonathan David, from Lille.

One round away from the Concacaf qualifiers, Costa Rica have at least one repechage berth. The United States and Mexico are almost guaranteed in the Qatar tournament.

The conditions for Costa Rica to secure a direct place in the World Cup are very difficult, but not impossible. The Costa Ricans will host the United States, but they must win by 10 goals to overtake their rival. Another chance is to dry Mexico against El Salvador and make a difference of four goals.

In the Concacaf competition, the top three nations go straight to the World Cup, while fourth place must play a repechage against the Oceania Qualifiers champion.

A total of 20 teams have already managed to qualify for the next edition of the World Cup, which will begin in November in Qatar.
