Extreme rains occur in Canada and cause “historic” flooding in the country’s west coast region, located near the Pacific Ocean.

The port city of Vancouver was isolated and, with one dead and four missing, the nation’s military was called in to help rescue the population.

Justin Trudeau, Canada’s prime minister, who is in Washington with the presidents of Mexico and the United States, confirmed that the military is assisting residents in the Vancouver area, according to AFP:

I can confirm that there are hundreds of members of the Canadian Armed Forces who travel to British Columbia to help with everything,” he said. Trudeau.

The rains, which come months after a rare heat wave in the British Columbia region sparked fires and claimed 500 lives, caused road closures, leaving 300 motorists stranded. There were also landslides, which closed some of Vancouver’s train tracks.

So far only one body has been found, that of a woman, in Lillooet, 250 km from Vancouver, after one of the area’s landslides.
