Masters of Rome: main names

Packed up, Carlos Alcaraz arrives with high expectations after winning his fourth trophy of 2023 last week in Madrid. The world number 2 has 29 wins and only two losses in six tournaments played this season. He beat Buenos Aires and Barcelona on clay, as well as Indian Wells on hard court. As soon as he enters the court in Rome, the Spaniard will regain the lead in the ATP rankings.

Champion in the Italian capital in 2022, Novak Djokovic returns to the circuit after not playing in Madrid because he was not in ideal physical condition – he was living with an elbow injury. Another name to watch out for: Russian Andrei Rublev, champion of Monte Carlo. Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas defends important points for the vice of Rome last year. Champion in Munich, the Dane Holger Rune is another tennis player to follow.

Absences

Haven’t played since the Australian Open, Rafael Nadal he still hasn’t recovered from his hip problem and has postponed his return yet again. His participation in Roland Garros is unknown. Italian, Matteo Berretini (ranked 20th) is still struggling with an abdominal injury and will be a tournament low. Withdrawn from the circuit due to injuries, sailor eyelash (23rd) and Nick Kyrgios (26th) follow as absences.

Brazilians

Thiago Monteiro (easy and Marcelo Melo (doubles) are Brazil’s representatives at the Rome Masters. Monteiro will make his debut against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in the first round. The cearense abandoned the Challenger of Cagliari after feeling pain in his elbow last week. In doubles, Melo reiterates the partnership with the German Alexander Zverev. The two will debut against German duo Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz.

The group consists of 96 players, with the top 32 seeds advancing directly to the second round. Head 1, Djokovic makes his debut against the Argentinian Tomás Martín Etcheverry. In the third round he will have a duel old school against the Swiss Stan Wawrinka or the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov. The Briton Cam Norrie appears as the potential opponent of the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, he could face Rune and the Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime. In the semi-finals, the Norwegian Casper Ruud and the Italian Jannik Sinner are the main candidates.

On the other side of the table, Alcaraz comes in at seed 2. He could debut against fellow countryman Alberto Ramos Viñolas or Italy’s Francesco Passaro. The Croatian Borna Coric could well be the opponent of the round of 16, repeating the semi-final in Madrid. On Wednesday, names like Tsitsipas and the Italian Lorenzo Musetti can appear. In the semi-finals, two Russians are among the best rated: Rublev and Daniill Medvedev.
