Fumio Kishida conveyed the invitation to Lula da Silva in a telephone conversation today, Japan’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

The Japanese leader expressed his interest in “discussing various issues of the international community” with Lula da Silva during the “enlarged meeting of G7 leaders”, which will be held from May 19 to 21 in Hiroshima.

Kishida also expressed hope that Lula, “with his vast experience, will play an active role in the meeting.”

The Brazilian president thanked the invitation, according to a note from the Japanese ministry.

The two leaders expressed their desire to expand political, economic and social relations, within the framework of the “great potential” of bilateral cooperation.

Kishida and Lula da Silva also discussed the situation in Ukraine or the tensions in Asia-Pacific linked to China and North Korea.

The two leaders confirmed their willingness to cooperate as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.

Lula da Silva’s invitation to the G7 comes a week before the Brazilian president’s trip to China to ask that country’s leader, Xi Jinping, to promote dialogue to restore peace between Russia and Ukraine.

Lula da Silva reinforced on Thursday his desire to promote peace dialogue in the war in Ukraine.

In addition to the leaders of the G7 – a group of the most industrialized countries made up of Japan, Germany, Canada, France, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States – Kishida invited the President Ukrainian, Volodymyr Zelensky, and his Korean counterpart, Yoon Suk-yeol, at the Hiroshima summit.

In addition to Lulada Silva, the Japanese executive is expected to invite other leaders from the so-called Global South, such as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
