President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was invited by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to participate in May this year in the G7 summit, a group that brings together the most industrialized countries in the world.

Under the Lula administration, the Brazilian government sought to adopt a foreign policy different from that practiced during the period when Jair Bolsonaro was in power.

Since taking office, Lula, for example:

  • traveled to Washington (USA) and met US President Joe Biden; Bolsonaro supported the re-election of Donald Trump, beaten by Biden;
  • he was in Buenos Aires to meet Argentine President Alberto Fernández; Bolsonaro supported the re-election of Mauricio Macri, beaten by Fernández;
  • determined the return of Brazil to the Union of South American Nations (Unasur); Bolsonaro had withdrawn the country from the multilateral forum.

The G7 brings together the most industrialized countries in the world. The group meets annually. The first summit took place in 1975, at the Château de Rambouillet (France), and brought together the French government itself, as well as representatives from the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan and Italy.

Where will this year’s summit take place?

The summit will take place in Hiroshima (Japan), from May 19 to 21.

Who is part of the G7?

The G7 includes France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Italy and Canada.

Is Brazil part of the G7?

No. If Lula agrees to participate in the summit, he will go as a guest, not as a member of the group.

Why was Lula called?

According to the Japanese Embassy in Brazil, during the invitation, Kishida said he was “looking forward” to discussing various issues in the international community with Lula. The Japanese Prime Minister assesses that Lula can play an “active role” in the G7 meeting because he has “a lot of experience”.

Under the government of Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022), Brazil was not invited to participate in the G7 summit.

What topics should be discussed at the summit?

In a public message, posted on the official G7 page, Fumio Kishida says the summit is expected to discuss topics such as the war in Ukraine, food security, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons; global economy, climate change and global development.

“The year of the G7 Presidency will also be a valuable opportunity for the next generation and beyond, young people and children, to turn their attention to global issues and take action. We will provide many opportunities to deepen exchanges, to learn together and to experience the summit for those who will be ahead of Japan and the world of tomorrow,” Kishida said in his post.
