The Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel was all-powerful and won Sunday (9) Paris-Roubaix, which took place in France.
The 256.5 km race between Compiègne and the André Pétrieux velodrome in Roubaix was marred by mud, mechanical problems and falls, such as that of Slovak Peter Sagan.
With 16.5km to go, van der Poel let the peloton down and fired to victory, entering the velodrome alone and crossing the finish line with a time of 5h 28min and 41 seconds. .
It was the second classic won by van der Poel in 2024. He had already won Milan-São Remo.
Belgium completed the podium, with Jasper Philipsen in second and Wout van Aert in third, a tiebreaker position set.
Canadian wins women’s race
In the women’s race, which took place on Saturday (8), there was a surprising victory for Canadian Alison Jackson. Jackson was in a peloton of five riders and after 145.4 km of racing he crossed the finish line in first place, with a time of 3h 42min and 56s.
It was the first time a Canadian cyclist had won the race, either for men or for women.
Italian Katia Ragusa finished second and Belgian Marthe Truyen finished third.
