Incident with two planes last week and two ships this weekend. Washington and Beijing test each other in risky and dangerous exercises
Worrying escalation of tensions between WE and the China. Washington and Beijing blame each other for an incident this weekend in the Taiwan Strait.
A Chinese ship came dangerously close to an American destroyer in the waters of the Taiwan Strait. Washington called the operation “dangerous”while the China considers that “the United States is asking for trouble”in the words of Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin.
The United States and Canada, which were conducting joint exercises in the region, say they were in international waters when the incident happened on Saturday; while Beijing claims they were in its territorial waters.
The US Department of Defense has denounced the “increasingly risky” actions of the Chinese military in Asia, while Beijing accuses Washington of interference in countries in the region.
The incident follows last week’s incident involving two military aircraft, one Chinese and one American, over the South China Sea.
