The European Union is likely to reach a deal this year that will pave the way for the world’s first major artificial intelligence (AI) law, the bloc’s head of technology regulator Margrethe Vestager said on Sunday.

This follows a preliminary agreement last Thursday between members of the European Parliament to put the EU’s artificial intelligence bill to a vote by a committee of lawmakers on May 11.

Parliament will then discuss the final details of the bill with EU member states and the European Commission before it becomes law.

At a press conference after the Group of Seven (G7) ministers’ meeting in Takasaki, Japan, Vestager said the European Union’s AI law is “pro-innovation” because it seeks to mitigate the risks of social harm caused by emerging technologies. .

Regulators around the world have been trying to strike a balance in which governments can embed “safeguards” into emerging artificial intelligence technology without it stifling innovation.

“The reason we have these safeguards for high-risk use cases is that ‘cleaning up’ after AI misuse would be far more expensive and harmful than using AI itself,” Vestager said.
