Driver Nico Hulkenberg was responsible for the first red-flag stop in second free practice at the Canadian Grand Prix, further compounding the delays in Friday’s activities.
FP2 was extended to 90 minutes to allow for more track time as less than five minutes of green flag was possible in the first session before Alpine’s Pierre Gasly ran into trouble and closed circuit camera failure, ensuring that no other action takes place.
However, 30 minutes into FP2, Hulkenberg’s Haas car was engulfed in smoke after losing power on the final corner, leaving the German driver stranded on the main straight.
“Lost engine, lost traction,” he reported on team radio.
This apparent power unit failure raises further questions about the Ferrari’s reliability and leaves Hulkenberg short of time at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve before the weekend.
