Lance Stroll of the Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant F1 team will receive a three-place grid penalty for Sunday’s race in Montreal due to an incident during qualifying for the 2023 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix. found guilty of having unnecessarily interfered with Esteban Ocon at turn 8, in violation of Article 37.5 of the FIA Sporting Regulations.
With this, the Canadian driver will start from 16th position.
The penalty was imposed after the marshals received a report from the race director and heard from the drivers and team representatives. They assessed a range of evidence, including positioning/tagging data, video, weather, telemetry, team radio and in-vehicle video.
Stroll, driving car 18, said that although he was aware of Ocon’s approaching car 31, he had no choice but to stay on the dry racing line due to the cold from its soft rubber tires. He claimed that he would have had an accident because of the wet runway if he had swerved. However, the team had warned Stroll of Ocon’s proximity, and the stewards concluded that he could have slowed down on the straight between turns 7 and 8 and let car 31 pass.
Because of this assessment, the commissioners determined that Stroll was unnecessarily hindering Ocon. As always, competitors have the right to appeal certain decisions of the stewards, in accordance with Article 15 of the FIA International Sporting Code and Chapter 4 of the FIA Legal and Disciplinary Regulations, within the applicable time limits.
The Stewards’ decision is made independently of the FIA and is based solely on the relevant regulations, guidelines and evidence presented.
