President Lula (PT) took advantage of part of his live broadcast this Monday (19) to attack his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), and the rival political group, reverting to using the term “fascist”.
Lula thus breaks with the promise made by his government, that the lives would only have an institutional character and that they would in no way resemble the broadcasts of Bolsonaro – who used this medium to spread false news and attack his opponents.
Lula held his second live broadcast on social media on Monday morning, dubbed Conversation with the President by the government.
Live broadcasts were scheduled to take place weekly on Tuesdays. The president, however, leaves this Monday for Europe, for an official trip to Italy and France.
As in the first conversation with the president, Lula was interviewed by journalist Marcos Uchôa, from EBC (Empresa Brasil de Comunicação).
When the Lives Realization Plan was initially leaked, the Secom (Secretary for Communication of the Presidency of the Republic) sought to rule out the possibility of copying the model used by Bolsonaro.
The then-president used his space to spread fake news, question the effectiveness of vaccines and the safety of electronic voting machines, and in virtually every episode he attacked political opponents.
The format used by Lula, interviewed by a journalist, aims to give an institutional character to the show, keeping the focus on the government’s achievements and plans. The first episode followed exactly this pattern, with no mention of naysayers.
However, at the end of the second show, Lula launched a series of attacks against Bolsonaro and his allies, even without being questioned about it.
The interviewer had asked him about his phone call the day before to congratulate former President Fernando Henrique Cardoso on his 92nd birthday.
Lula then added that he also invited former President José Sarney to inaugurate the North-South Railway, as he was the one who started the work in the 1980s.
“I think we live in a world where whenever we can show our attitude of brotherhood, love, kindness, solidarity, we have to do it. Because we have to put an end to this climate of hatred that is is created in the world, and in Brazil,” the president said.
“The fascists have already proven that they tried to make a coup coordinated by the former president, which he is now trying to deny. But when he lost the election, he was locked inside the house to prepare the coup.
“So I think we will investigate very calmly. Everyone will have a chance to defend themselves. So I want people to be assured that we are going to investigate. Whoever is at fault with the notary will have to pay,” added the president.
The interviewer then attempted to change the subject, talking about getting back to the good relationship he has with FHC and Sarney, which is “political normal.” But Lula ignored the signal and came back to attack Bolsonaro.
We will not tolerate those who tried to stage a coup and destroy democracy in the country.
“I spoke with Sarney, with Itamar [Franco], with Colour. Now you have a citizen who doesn’t want to talk to anyone, he just wants to spread lies, fake news, he just wants to talk nonsense and aggression against others. In other words, this must stop, because this country must find peace,” he added.
