US Navy Sends Offshore Lifting Equipment to Region in Search of Missing Submarine | World

Learn how the submarine that took tourists to see the wreck of the Titanic works

The United States Navy deploys a specialized rescue system capable of lifting large, bulky and heavy underwater objects, such as aircraft or small vessels, in hopes of finding the missing submarine during a trip to visit the wreck of the Titanic.

The missing tourist submarine weighs more than 9 tons, far less than the capacity of this US Navy system, which is designed to lift more than 27 tons of seawater.

The system is equipped with a traction winch.

Even if the submersible is located, its rescue presents enormous logistical challenges, given the extreme conditions kilometers deep.

On Sunday (18), a tourist submarine with five people on board began a dive towards the wreck of the Titanic, about 3,800 meters deep in the Atlantic. Approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes later, the ship lost communication with the surface.

The U.S. Coast Guard is leading the search operation for the submarine.

On Tuesday, Canadian planes participating in these operations picked up noises that may have been emitted by the missing submarine. This Wednesday, noises were also detected, which seem to be beats.

Authorities said the sounds may not have come from the ship, but even so the whole operation was reorganized to focus on the regions where these sounds were captured.

Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) were dispatched to the area where Canadian aircraft recorded the noises.

The air supply aboard the submersible could be exhausted by Thursday morning.

🚢 What is the purpose of the expedition? See the wreck of the Titanic, which sank in 1912, in the Atlantic Ocean.

🧭 Where is the wreck of the Titanic? About 3,800 meters deep, 650 km off the coast of Canada.

🗓️ When did the sub go missing? The expedition started on Friday (16), departing from Newsfoundland, Canada. The descent itself began on Sunday (18). The initial expectation was that it would take around two hours to reach the wreckage of the Titanic, but the module lost communication after 1 hour and 45 minutes of travel.

  • OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, pilot of the submarine;
  • Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood;
  • Suleman Dawood, who is the son of Shahzada;
  • British billionaire and explorer Hamish Harding;
  • and the former commander of the French Navy Paul-Henry Nargeolet, a great specialist in the sinking of the Titanic.

🎮 How is the sub? Called Titan, it:

  • it is 6.5 meters long and 3 meters wide;
  • weighs over 10 tons and is made of carbon fiber and titanium;
  • it is guided by a joystick that looks a lot like a video game controller;
  • it moves at a speed of 3 knots (5.5 km/h) and is propelled by four thrusters;
  • can accommodate up to five people;
  • and it is not self-contained, like a large submarine, therefore it had to be transported on the surface of the sea for 643 km to the descent region.
  • the submarine may be at the bottom of the ocean;
  • it can float on the surface;
  • or it may have imploded under the pressure of the water column.
