The 40th edition of Karate Combat will take place this Saturday (24), in Miami, United States. The main event of the evening will feature the first unification of the belts in the history of the organization. In the welterweight division, the lineal champion Josh Quayhagen (USA) will face the interim Raphael Aghayev (Azerbaijan).
Considered the “Pelé” of sports karate, Aghayev was a silver medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, in addition to being a five-time world champion and 11-time European champion. Undefeated for four fights in Karate Combat, he won the interim belt after the strong performance that culminated in the points victory over the equally legendary Raymond Daniels in December last year.
“Every fight (in Karate Combat) is a great honor for me. Saturday’s victory would crown a new milestone in my professional life. I am fully focused and trained to make it happen”declared Aghayev.
With a record of six wins and two losses, Quayhagen has held the category belt since 2020. The American has also played in MMA and has significant victories in his career, such as against the famous Brazilian striker Cosmo Alexandre.
“I had problems recently with some injuries, but now I’m ready for anything. In fact, it’s difficult to be 100% fit for a fight with the intensive training I do. But I prefer it so. He (Aghayev ) is considered the greatest of all time, and he has a lot of merit for that. I know that we will both be tested to the limit. Let’s see who will have their arm raised at the end”, says the linear champ.
In the lightweight category (up to 68 kg), the co-main event also promises another high-level challenge. Former Glory and Bellator kickboxing champion, Canadian Gabriel Varga will face former division champion Edgars Skrivers of Latvia. The winner will automatically qualify to face the Brazilian Luiz Rocha, current champion of the category.
In Brazil, Karate Combat can be watched live and for free on all of the organization’s digital platforms. The Combate Channel is also broadcasting the event. Consult the timetable.
