Smoke from wildfires in Canada reaches the United States

A smoke haze blanketed Chicago and much of the northern Midwest region Wednesday morning (28). The day before, the sudden drop in air quality forced many residents of the American Midwest to wear face masks outdoors.

Other major cities like Detroit, Indianapolis, Cleveland and Milwaukee will experience dangerous air quality ratings throughout the day.

New York will also be blanketed in smoke – yesterday the state’s Governor, Kathy Hochul, told New Yorkers to watch out for air pollution, which can reach unhealthy and dangerous levels. The mayor even recommended that all New Yorkers wear masks.

The Canadian smoke, which has been going on for months, has even reached Europe. In Spain, the sky of the city of Vigo has turned orange. Satellites recorded the smoke crossing the Atlantic.

This time what brought the smoke to US cities is a thunderstorm system now moving east and expected to arrive with less intensity.

At present, the smoke is concentrated in the border states. The city with the worst air quality is Detroit. Also Pittsburg and Chicago where the air quality is rated as very unhealthy.
