A Brazilian delegation shone in the disputes of women’s freestyle this Friday (7) at Pan American U-20 Wrestling in Santiago, in Chile. Brazilian fighters won
4 medals of six possible. With the bronze medal of Maxime Gabriel got yesterday at category 87kg of Greco-Roman styleadd the country 5 medals won.
Mayara Ramos, 62kg category, made her debut with a touchdown win over Chilean Martina Corvolan in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals, the Brazilian faced Colombian Eliana Palácios and won 9-4. The final was played against Mexican Melanie Villalba, who ended up defeating the Brazilian on touchdown. The silver medal guaranteed Mayara’s participation in the U20 World Wrestling Championship in August in Poland.
Emily Ferreira, 53kg category, faced a dispute in the format all against all. The Brazilian made his debut with a backhand to American Alexandra Szkotnick on touchdown. In the next round, the fighter managed to stop the Canadian Ivy Threatful and win the first of the tournament. In the third round, Emily found herself outmatched 13-6 at the end of the second round. The Brazilian ended the participation with a victory over the Mexican Andrea Barrientos, by forfeit. Two wins and the bronze medal for sure.
Leticia Square, 68 kg category, also competed in the all against all system. She started with a technical superiority victory (10 to 0) over the Mexican Naomi Macias, but suffered a loss in touch against the North American London Houston in the sequence. Letícia did not give up, she returned to the mat and won the Chilean Nataly Rojas by bending over. In the last fight, the Brazilian was beaten by the Colombian Nicoll Osorio by 11 to 0, but the bronze medal was already assured.
In the 76 kg category, Maria Luiza de Almeida dos Santos, facing the system all against all. The Brazilian won over Mexican Karime Resendiz on her debut by forfeit. She was then beaten by North American Kyllie Walker to touchdown and by Canadian Myah Philips 11-0. Peruvian Aomi Morales and Brazil won fourth bronze in the tournament.
Maria Eduarda Lopes Ramos Chaves, 50kg category, stopped in the quarterfinals after being beaten to the touch by Ecuadorian Vicky Gomes and finished in 9th place. Another representative of Brazil, Thaina Anibal Ribeiro57kg category, failed to advance to Group B of the category and finished in 6th place overall.
The 2023 Pan American Under-20 Wrestling Championship continues this Saturday (8), with male freestyle athletes entering action on the final day of the tournament.
