Exactly four years ago, on the same stage as the Canadian GP next Sunday, the 18th, the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve experienced a tense situation at the end of the race, which ended up being settled by the “Formula 1 VAR”, a controversy which frustrated the German Sebastian Vettel, then at Ferrari, now retired, in favor of Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes).
REMEMBERING WHAT HAPPENED…
The race direction took the decision to punish Sebastian Vettel in five seconds, and the German lost the victory he had in his hands, after an absolutely questionable interpretation. Vettel passed through the grass and, returning to the track, the stewards understood that he was closing Hamilton, who was in second place.
Thus, even crossing the finish line in second position, but with a difference of less than five seconds, Hamilton ended up being declared the winner of the Canadian GP held in Montreal, in what was the seventh stage of the championship.
VETTEL DOMINATED BUT…
Starting from pole, Vettel, now at Aston Martin, gave none of Hamilton’s attempts to put out the red lights a chance and kept the Brits a nice margin, and had everything to win again after a fast that has lasted since the 2018 Belgian GP, were it not for the penalty he received.
VETTEL, REVOLT
After speaking to the stewards, Vettel changed the number plate in front of the cars, putting the number 2 for Hamilton’s Mercedes.
LECLERC, ALMOST SECOND PLACE…
Charles Leclerc tightened the pace towards the end and nearly finished the race less than 5 seconds behind Vettel, which would earn him second place. But, narrowly, he ended up completing the podium, third.
Valtteri Bottas took his Mercedes to fourth place. The Finn’s performance was only erased by the feat he achieved, the fastest lap (1min13s078), breaking the record that had belonged to Rubens Barrichello since 2004, then to Ferrari, which that year clocked 1min13s622.
Max Verstappen (Red Bull), who started ninth, recovered well to close the Canadian race in fifth place.
Daniel Ricciardo, meanwhile, put up a good fight, had some great fights with Verstappen and Bottas and managed a fine sixth for Renault, who also scored points with seventh-placed Nico Hulkenberg.
