A week after being runner-up at Wimbledon, Novak Djokovic has opted to extend his rest period ahead of the start of the fast-paced tour, which will culminate in the US Open next month. The Serbian tennis player has withdrawn from the Toronto Masters 1000, which begins on August 7 in Canada.
“I’ve always enjoyed my time in Canada, but after talking to my team I believe it’s the right decision to make,” said the current world number two, who has won the Canadian competition four times. “I’m really looking forward to returning to Canada and Toronto in the next few years to play in front of so many amazing fans.”
The organization of the Canadian competition explained that Djokovic withdrew due to fatigue. The 36-year-old Serb was to begin his preparations for the US Open in Toronto, the first major tournament after Wimbledon, where the former world No. 1 suffered a big disappointment last Sunday.
In the final of the British tournament, Djokovic had the opportunity to equal several records, such as that of the Swiss Roger Federer at Wimbledon (8 titles) and that of the Australian Margaret Court, general record holder of the Grand Slam tournaments (24 trophies), between men and women. But the Serb ended up being beaten by the young Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in five sets in London.
Djokovic’s place in the Canadian table will be occupied by American Christopher Eubanks, one of Wimbledon’s sensations. On the London lawn, he surprised by reaching the quarter-finals, leaving some of the main seeds of the tournament on the way.
