New York (USA) – Far from competition since Wimbledon, Denis Shapovalov will not play the US Open either. The 24-year-old Canadian and current 22nd in the standings announced his retirement last Wednesday, due to a knee injury.
“Although I’m doing my best to be 100% healthy in time for the US Open, my knee needs more time and unfortunately I have to retire,” Shapovalov said on his social media.
“That Grand Slam energy, especially in New York, is unlike anything else. I’m really going to miss playing in front of amazing fans there this year,” added the Canadian, who reached the quarter-finals. of the tournament in 2020 and stopped in the third round last year.
In the current season, Shapovalov has 13 wins and 13 losses. His main results for the year were the quarter-finals in Adelaide, also in January, and the round of 16 at Wimbledon, when he was already feeling the pain in his knee.
With the withdrawal of Shapovalov, the experienced 34-year-old Hungarian Attila Balazs enters directly into the main draw, while the Japanese Yosuke Watanuki becomes the next on the waiting list.
