The Brazilian government will send a team to help fight the wildfires that have plagued Canada since March and intensified in June. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva responded to a request for humanitarian aid made by the Canadian government.
Composed of 104 forest firefighting specialists, the Brazilian mission will operate in the most affected forests in Canada and will stay in this country for one month. The Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responsible for Brazilian humanitarian cooperation, will coordinate the mission.
By internal legal decision of the Canadian government, the expenses of Brazil for the sending of the humanitarian mission will be reimbursed by this country, which will also provide planes for the transport of the Brazilian specialists and their equipment.
Professionals from the following organizations participate in the mission: Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) and Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (Icmbio), both of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change ; National Secretariat for Protection and Civil Defense of the Ministry of Integration and Territorial Planning; National Public Security Force, Ministry of Justice and Public Security; and military firefighters from the states of Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Bahia, Ceará, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Pará, Paraíba, Paraná, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Rondônia, Santa Catarina, São Paulo and Tocantins, and the Federal District.
The Ministries of Defense, Transport and Finance cooperate in the organization of the mission, in addition to the National Council of Military Firefighters of Brazil and other federal and state departments.
