The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE) announced the extension of the visa waiver period for tourists from the United States, Canada and Australia until January 10, 2024. In May, the Government of PT had announced the return of the visa requirement from January 1, 2024. from next October. According to Itamaraty, the extension was due to technical problems.
The visa exemption for citizens of the three countries who come to Brazil for tourism, business, sports or artistic purposes, without the intention of establishing residence, was granted by the Bolsonaro government in March 2019.
According to preliminary data from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs published in February this year, the exemption promoted by the previous government would not have generated major impacts on the arrival of tourists.
The previous government’s decision also included visitors from Japan, who were excluded from Itamaraty’s announcement after pledging to also stop requiring visas from Brazilians for trips of up to 90 days. The agreement will enter into force on September 30 and will initially be valid for three years.
“This measure only applies to US, Canadian and Australian citizens. For Japanese citizens, the bilateral agreement that reciprocally exempts the need for a visit visa for stays of up to 90 days will come into effect on September 30. The agreement is initially valid for three years, and it is also valid for Brazilians who wish to travel to Japan,” reads an excerpt from Itamaraty’s press release, published last Monday (28).
