After months of demands and negotiations, the Canadian women’s team finally reached an agreement with the Canadian Football Federation regarding this year’s payments. The new agreement, which is provisional in nature, ensures that the athletes will receive the same amount of money agreed with the men’s team.
There are, however, some details. Part of the prize money the women’s team will receive for participating in the World Cup will be used to pay the men’s team’s salary arrears. This team has not yet received the contributions for its participation in the World Cup in Qatar and has been trying to negotiate with the federation for around eight months.
The players, however, criticized the federation’s position during negotiations and even said that the country’s organization is using the women’s team to reach an agreement that benefits them. Athletes celebrated the equal pay decision, but were also unhappy with some conditions.
In a statement posted on its social networks, the Canadian women’s team declared that it would continue to fight for a better agreement. “We were forced to choose between receiving a share of the rewards for our teams’ success at the World Cup or the same salary and treatment as the men’s team. It’s a choice we shouldn’t have to make. “
“It’s not over yet. We and the Men’s National Team remain committed to finding a long-term solution that provides fair and equal treatment for our national teams, as well as an investment in the future of Canadian soccer, but for now our team just wants to focus on football.”
With four points, Canada is in second place in Group B and is aiming for a place in the round of 16 of the World Cup. The Canadian team is one of the candidates for the title since it is the current Olympic champion. The team’s decisive match will take place against hosts Australia next Monday, at 7 a.m. (Brasília time).
