On the eve of the Pan American Games in Lima, Canadian Michael Plantinga fractured the little finger of his right hand in an unusual way, but that was not enough to rule him out of the beach volleyball competition and drew attention to his protection with which he has been playing since last Wednesday (24).
The injury could have occurred during training before the tournament, but in reality it happened in a very unusual way. “I was renovating the patio of my house two weeks ago when a brick fell and broke the little finger on my right hand,” recalls the Canadian. This could be a problem for Plantinga, as one of his specialties is blocking.
Injury aside, Plantinga and his partner Aaron Nusbaum are looking for a place in the top eight this Saturday, when the duels between the second and third in each phase begin. In the duo’s last match in Group D, they were defeated by Chilean cousins Esteban and Marco Grimalt by 21-14 and 21-11. It was the second defeat for the Canadian duo who placed third in the group with four points.
This Saturday afternoon, at 12:40 p.m., the Canadian duo will face Americans Ian Satterfield and Mark Burik in search of a place in the quarter-finals of the competition. If they win, Plantinga and Nusbaum will face their Chilean cousins Grimalt again.
