The federal government has extended until January 10, 2024 the deadline to reinstate the visa requirement to enter Brazil for holders of common passports from Australia, Canada and the United States.
Under the previous government, the visa requirement for Americans, Canadians, Australians and Japanese, who did not need a visa, was suspended. It was given for free. No reciprocity. Brazilians still need a visa.”
Mauro Vieira, Minister of Foreign Affairs
THE Decree No. 11,692 was published on Wednesday (6/9) in the Official Journal of the Union, amending the entry into force of Decree No. 11,515/2023, which provided for the start of the collection of visas for October 1.
The extension aims to allow the completion of the system implementation process and to avoid the start of the implementation of the visa requirement in a period close to the peak tourist season at the end of the year, thus ensuring its safe introduction, without affecting the tourism sector.
In the program “Good morning, Minister” this Wednesday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, commented on the issue of visas. “Under the previous government, the obligation for Americans, Canadians, Australians and Japanese to come to Brazil without a visa was suspended. It was given for free. No reciprocity. Brazilians still need a visa,” he recalled.
NEGOTIATIONS – “At the beginning of the government, on the instructions of the president, we restored visas. We called on countries to try to negotiate. Japan accepted and we negotiated. Others said that it was not possible according to the legislation of each of them,” Vieira said.
The minister also said the federal government was willing to negotiate visa exemptions on the basis of reciprocity. “In other words, the country that accepts Brazilians to travel without a physical visa, we will give them the same benefit,” he explained.
In May, President Lula was in Japan and closed agreement to release visas for Brazilians entering the country and Japanese arriving in Brazil. The exemption measure will come into force from September 30.
