Luisa Stefani wins WTA 1000 women’s doubles tournament in Montreal

Brazilian tennis player Luisa Stefani (world number 22) won the WTA 1000 women’s doubles tournament this Sunday (15) in Montreal. Playing alongside the Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski (15th in the world), the bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics beat the Slovenian Andreja Klepac and the Croatian Darija Jurak by 2 sets to 0 (share 6/3 6/4). This is the greatest achievement of the 24-year-old’s career, as the Canadian WTA 1000 is part of the series of events only slightly smaller than the four Grand Slams (Wimbledon, US Open, Australian Open and Roland Garros).

The São Paulo native has already won two victories, both with American Hayley Carter, in WTA 250 tournaments: in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in 2019 and in Lexington, United States, in August 2020. For the trophy , Luisa will move up three places in the rankings to 19th place, being the first Brazilian to enter the top 20 since the creation of the WTA rankings in 1975.

The duo travels to Cincinnati, United States, on Sunday evening, where they will compete in another WTA 1000, starting this Monday (16). This is the final preparatory event for the US Open, which begins on the 30th.
