Canadian singer Alessia Cara is experiencing a special moment in her career. After the worldwide success of the song Here – which reached more than 200 million views on YouTube –, the artist is preparing the arrival of a new album with the release of two singles.
Sweet Dream is the lead track of the project and symbolizes a new era in the 25-year-old artist’s career. “I feel like it’s a new version of me as an artist and as a person. This song is one of the most fun albums I’ve ever made. So, I definitely see this as an evolution in my career,” he emphasizes.
The song brings elements of pop music, which Alessia Cara is used to working with. In the composition she talks about anxiety and insomnia, problems that accompanied her during a turbulent period in her personal and artistic life. “It was written at a very difficult time in my life, with a lot of emotional pain, and represents the struggles I went through,” he says.
The second opus appears with a direct link to Sweet Dream, but with an opposite – and, in a way, complementary – reflection. Shapeshifter, full of jazz characteristics and inspired by Amy Winehouse, puts Alessia back on her feet, with the return of confidence and sanity. “I really tried to show both sides of who I am. It’s cool because we did it in a way that the timelines of the two clips connect,” he explains.
In addition to the releases that will make up the new album, the singer also participated in two special projects. She was invited to be part of the soundtrack for Paw Patrol: The Movie and also wrote the theme song for the new Blade Runner series Black Lotus.
“Paw Patrol is a children’s film and Blade Runner is a more adult, action and intense series. I’m happy to have worked with both of them. I like to expand my musical universe, speak to adults and children alike and bring this pleasure to those who listen to me. These are really cool projects,” he analyzes.
When asked about Brazil, Alessia Cara was full of praise for MPB and talked about the artists she likes to listen to the most. “I love Brazilian music, it’s one of my favorite musical genres in the world. I love listening to Astrud Gilberto, João Gilberto and Rodrigo Amarante. They’re my favorites, I listen to them all the time,” he reveals.
