Paris 2024: why can Canada fall in football even with 2 victories?

With Brazil’s defeat against Spain this Wednesday (7/31) in the final round of the group stage of women’s football at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the calculators come into action to find out, after all, who advances to the eighth of final.

According to the competition regulations, the first two classified in the 3 groups advance directly, in addition to the two best third classified in the general classification. Brazil will have to make complicated calculations to appear in this second group.

The fight for the best third places will be between Canada, which is part of Group A; Australia, in Group B; and Brazil, third place in Group C.

It should be noted, however, that the Canadian team is in third place in the group, even though they won the first two matches they played, against New Zealand and France.

Punishment
Canada could pay dearly for a punishment suffered even before its Games debut. FIFA punished the delegation by withdrawing six points from the tournament, in addition to banning three members of the technical team for one year. This severe sanction follows a scandal involving the irregular use of a drone to spy on the New Zealand team, its first round opponent.

The team’s coach, Bev Priestman, was suspended by the national football federation and subsequently excluded from the Olympic tournament. She had been one of those who won gold in Tokyo. In addition to her, two assistants were also sanctioned with a one-year football ban.
