Canadian Prime Minister Lula explains his caution regarding Venezuela’s elections

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) met this Tuesday (13/8) with the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau. The meeting took place by telephone and, during it, both highlighted the need for transparency in the electoral process in Venezuela.

“The most important thing is to keep South America free from conflict, in prosperity and harmony,” the Brazilian said. Lula also highlighted Brazil’s efforts in cooperation with Colombia and Mexico to “normalize the political situation” in Venezuela.

The need to be cautious in recognizing the election results in this Latin American country is due, according to Lula, to “a history of errors by the international community” with Venezuela.

These shortcomings would be the sanctions suffered by the nation and the recognition of Juan Guaidó as president of the country.

During the call, the Brazilian president also took the opportunity to invite Trudeau to the meeting of democratic governments against extremism, which is expected to be held on the eve of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in September in the United States. -United.

Election

Since the elections in Venezuela, the Brazilian government has avoided making statements about who won the elections. The initial position was to wait for the electoral results to know whether Nicolas Maduro’s re-election was legitimate.

Celso Amorim, special presidential adviser for international affairs, followed Venezuela’s election day and told GloboNews that “some sort of mediation conversation is necessary” as opponent Emmundo González contests the result.

Lula and Maduro were longtime allies, but the Brazilian president began to distance himself when the Venezuelan president raised his voice by threatening “bloodshed” if he lost the election.
