The visa requirement for tourists from Canada, Australia and the United States (USA) to enter Brazil has been postponed until April 10. This requirement would be reinstated on January 10, but a decree signed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva extended this change. The text was published in a supplementary edition of Official Journal of the Union (DOU)this Thursday (4).
The government informed that the postponement is due to the need to complete the system implementation process and avoid starting the implementation of the requirement during the peak travel season, at the end and beginning of the year. “The intention is to guarantee a safe introduction of the measure, without consequences for the tourism sector,” indicates a note published by the press office of the Palácio do Planalto.
No reciprocity
In 2019, former President Jair Bolsonaro issued a decree removing the tourist visa requirement for citizens of the three countries, as well as Japan, but without reciprocity, that is, Brazilian tourists continued to have to obtain a visa to enter the United States. Australia and Canada.
In September last year, visa exemptions for Brazilians for tourism in Japan began to come into force, following an agreement signed by President Lula and the Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, during the summit of G7, held in the Japanese city of Hiroshima. the first half of 2023.
The resumption of the visa requirement is a measure based on the principle of reciprocity historically adopted by Brazilian diplomacy.
