President Jair Bolsonaro declared official mourning across Brazil for three days for the death of Japan’s former prime minister Shinzo Abe, shot on Friday.
The Brazilian said he received the news with “extreme indignation and regret” and called Abe a “brilliant leader who was a great friend of Brazil”.
“I extend to Abe’s family, as well as to our Japanese brothers, my solidarity and the wish that God takes care of their souls in this moment of pain,” Bolsonaro wrote on social media.
“As a sign of respect for the Japanese people, recognition of Shinzo Abe’s friendship with Brazil and solidarity in the face of unjustifiable cruelty, I have declared official mourning nationwide for 3 days. May your murder be severely punished. We are with Japan,” he added.
Shinzo Abe was the longest-serving prime minister in Japanese history, serving in the post from 2012 until 2020, when he stepped down due to health reasons.
