American Fred Kerley won gold in the 100m sprint at the World Championships in Athletics in Oregon State, USA. Running at home, Kerley clocked 9s86 and managed to stay ahead of compatriots Marvin Bracy (9s874) and Trayvon Bromell (9s876), who won the silver and bronze medals respectively.
On Saturday, Brazilian sprinters Rodrigo Nascimento and Erik Cardoso battled for a place in the final, but failed to advance on time to the semifinals. The gold medal fight was dominated by the United States, which had four athletes in the top eight.
Oblique Seville of Jamaica was fourth in 9.97 ahead of South African Akani Simbine fifth in 10.01. Another home runner in Eugene, Christian Coleman arrived with Akani but posted the sixth fastest time, also at 10.01. Japanese Abdul Sani-Brown (10s06) was seventh and Canadian Aaron Brown came last (10s07).
There were also disputes in the men’s long jump, with a twist in the final jump, which gave China’s Wang Jianan the gold medal. The Asian hit 8.36m in the final attempt, beating Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece, who clocked 8.32m. The bronze medal went to the Swiss Simon Ehammer, with 8.16 m.
Saturday night also saw a gold medal in the women’s shot put, won by American Chase Ealey, with 20.49m. China’s Lijiao Gong won silver with 20.39m. The bronze medal went to the Dutch Jessica Schilder, with a distance of 19.77 m.
