A Canadian family has caught the eye after revealing they stopped using toilet paper four years ago. The Allens, known on YouTube for “The Fairly Local Family” channel, said they started cleaning themselves with washable and reusable cloths to save on bills and be more sustainable.
In an interview with ‘The Sun’ newspaper, mother Amber Allen explained that the measure started as a way to save expenses and reduce shopping expenses, as they racked up a large debt due to fees schooling and college. As a result, she began to force family members to clean themselves with wet wipes. Gradually, they adapted to using reusable cloths.
“I was literally flushing my money down the toilet,” commented Amber, who explained that after not using toilet paper for a while, they realized how superfluous the item was and that it had no effect. more sense to buy them.
The family’s baby was the first to be cleaned with the reusable cloths and nappies, and even after the family managed to get the bills under control, Amber said the change in habits had already been absorbed by them, which continued to use the washcloths. . These, by the way, she says she sanitizes with water and vinegar before putting them in the washing machine.
sustainability tips
On social media, the Allen family offers tips on saving money and living a sustainable lifestyle, which includes producing the food they eat. To do this, they moved in April to a less expensive area of rural Ontario. There they have a vegetable garden and a small farm.
When it comes to using washcloths instead of toilet paper, Amber recommends the most durable and softest fabrics, such as flannels or the like. She also suggested people buy used items to save money or search for bulk lots online.
