Canadian judges Carl Phoenix and Stephen Borland made their debuts on the Agroleite track during the 2022 edition. Renowned professionals who have participated in the biggest shows in the world, they were responsible for evaluating the 500 animals of Dutch and Jersey breeds entered at the event.
The two are unanimous on the quality of the young and adult animals they have judged in the National Milk Capital. “The animals here owe nothing to the animals in the shows that I have already judged. When I lined up for the big adult championship, all the udders looked great. Heifers, heads in their classes, can compete with young cattle anywhere in the world,” reports Carl Phoenix about the Holstein breed.
Stephen Borland, Jersey Breed Assessor, was impressed with the standard he found at Agroleite. “There is nothing to say, they are at the same level as the best animals in the world. One animal or another, among the champions, is better or equal to the highest level animals I have seen in other countries,” he explains.
Another point that delighted them was the dynamism and involvement of the families of animal exhibitors. Phoenix describes the warm celebration that takes place here when the cow is rewarded, as the family of exhibitors and presenters take to the floor, something never before seen in the United States and Canada. Borland adds that at events in other countries, the maximum celebration is to raise your arm, whereas here, in addition to all the vibrations, you feel and feel that people around the arena are paying attention to what happening, participate in this moment. “I was very happy to see young people, not just teenagers, but even younger people involved in the businesses of their parents and grandparents, in agriculture as a whole,” says Stephen Borland.
The judging of the animals began on Wednesday the 17th, the second day of the event, and ended on the night of Saturday the 20th. The two judges worked together to choose the Cow of the Future and the Supreme Breed Champion, respectively the best young animal and best adult animal of the competition. The translation of the judgments of the Holstein breed in its two varieties was carried out by Cláudio Aragon and of the Jersey breed by Fábio Fogaça.
