Stabbings in Canada are ‘horrific and disturbing’ – Prime Minister Trudeau

Ottawa, Canada, Sep 5, 2022 (Lusa) — The stabbings that left at least 10 dead and 15 injured in two communities in the province of Saskatchewan are “horrific and disturbing”, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“My thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones and those who have been injured,” wrote the Canadian leader on the social network Twitter.

Trudeau added that the government was monitoring the situation closely as security forces tried to locate Damien Sanderson and Myles Sanderson, 31 and 30, the two suspected perpetrators of Sunday’s attacks.

Also on Twitter, federal Indigenous Affairs Minister Marc Miller said he has reached out to leaders of the James Smith Cree Indigenous Nation to offer them all the support and help they may need.

James Smith Cree Nation officials have declared a state of emergency and created two emergency operations centers to “provide health support to the three communities” on the reservation.

“We have located 10 people killed at 13 locations in the Cree Nation communities of James Smith and Weldon in Saskatchewan,” located in central Saskatchewan, said Canadian Mounted Police Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore.

According to the official, several other people were injured, 15 of whom had to be transported to different hospitals.

Regina police said in a statement that with mounted police support, they were working on multiple fronts to locate and detain the suspects and had “mobilized additional public safety resources throughout the city.”

The Saskatchewan Health Authority, quoted by The Associated Press, said multiple victims were being treated at different locations.

“A request for additional personnel has been issued to respond to the influx of injured people,” said spokeswoman Anne Linemann.

According to preliminary investigations, some people were intentionally stabbed, while others were attacked randomly, and at this time the motives of the attackers are unknown.

The suspects were first spotted in Regina, the capital of Saskatchewan, but alerts and search operations have spread to neighboring provinces of Manitoba and Alberta, a vast region half the size of the ‘Europe.
