The sports narrator Roberto Queiroz, known as Garganta de Aço, died on Sunday (24), in Recife. The death was announced this Monday (25) by Rádio Jornal, where the announcer worked for years, and confirmed by Globe Television with relatives of the broadcaster. The cause of death has not been reported (watch the video above).

Roberto Queiroz, 71, has become known for his powerful voice and the narration of several achievements of the Pernambuco clubs. According to relatives, he was admitted to a hospital in the Derby district, in the central region of the capital. The name of the health unit was also not disclosed.

“Garganta de Aço” began his career as a sports narrator in Caruaru, in the Agreste region of the state, with his brother Mané Queiroz, who died in 2014.
In addition to Rádio Jornal, Roberto Queiroz has worked at Rádio Clube and CBN, being known to fans of following Pernambuco teams on the radio.

One of Roberto Queiroz’s historic moments was narrating the 1987 Brazilian title, won by Sport, when he shouted Marco Antônio’s name with the crowd, shortly after scoring the team’s winning goal .
Until the last update of this report, the family had not released details of the wake and burial.
In a note, Governor Paulo Câmara (PSB) deplored the death of Roberto Queiroz. According to the manager, he “had a captive space in the hearts of those who followed the sport on the radio, with his emotional, powerful and unmistakable storytelling”.
The governor also said that Roberto will “be missed by countless admirers, who will remember the significant accomplishments told by the Gorge of Steel, as it was called”.
In the statement, Câmara expressed his solidarity with his family, friends, fellow professionals and all listeners.
