5G in Porto Alegre: Customers report that their phones still do not work with the new technology | Rio Grande do Sul

The 5G signal was released for use in Porto Alegre this Friday (29). The National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) has authorized the use of the frequency and, as the operators pay for the licenses, they can now provide the signal to users. However, customers reported to the report of RBS Television during that Friday morning that their phones, although compatible with the new technology, still did not work with the new frequency.

“Mine is 4G. Let me see here…it didn’t go in. It should be automatic, right?” said administrative assistant Kimberly dos Santos.

Conexis Brasil Digital, an entity that brings together operators, says that “the 5G network, at a frequency of 3.5 GHz, was activated today in Porto Alegre and will see a gradual growth in mobile coverage in the city. by report to the networks of the For more information and to ask questions about the conditions of use and the devices compatible with 5G technology, the user can consult the website of his operator.

THE RBS Television also heard from three other people in the historic center of Porto Alegre who said their phones were compatible with 5G and they still did not recognize the new frequency.

There is also the case of those people who are excited about new technologies but will need a new phone for it. This is the case of the commercial adviser Ana Carolina da Rosa.

“I thought a phone update would be needed, I didn’t know how it would work. But I’m going to have to switch devices to take advantage of 5G,” he says.

Capital has, according to the Monitoring Group for the implementation of solutions to interference problems in the band 3625 to 3700 MHz (Gaispi), 103 positions activated. This amount is 80% above the minimum required.

However, according to the municipality, Porto Alegre has 291 branches 4G licenses, which can be replaced by 5G according to the demand and plans of each operator.

In addition, according to secretary Germano Bremm, the city is ready to receive 5G antennas in street furniture, that is, in 42,000 traffic signs, 100,000 streetlights, 1,500 bus stops and 170 street clocks.

“It takes 10 5G antennas to have the same coverage as 4G. So we have planned the possibility of installing antennas on road signs and public lighting”, details the holder of the file.

The obligation of operators is to install one branch per 100,000 inhabitantsbut the city government estimates that this number will soon be exceeded.

G1 explains: the 5G revolution

Find out below what each operator guides customers to start using the technology:

Claro advises that it will not require any changes to the customer’s contract. He just needs to have a 5G-compatible device and be in a coverage area, without having to change plans or chips. Currently, according to the company, 70% of devices sold by Claro are compatible with 5G.

The operator will be available in 12 districts of Porto Alegre: Higienópolis, Windmills, Jardim Europa, Boa Vista, Mont’Serrat, Auxiliadora, Bela Vista, Petrópolis, Três Figueiras, Rio Branco, Tristesse and Vila Assuncao.

The initial expectation is to achieve speeds between 600 Mbps and 800 Mbps, reaching up to 1 Gbps (depending on cell size and the number of terminals in simultaneous use at that time).

“The availability of 5G+ opens the door to new discussions, opportunities in business, services, communications, accelerates digitization, in addition to stimulating the creation of applications that will make a difference in people’s lives and make the more fun and productive everyday life. But that’s only the beginning. We have a long and difficult road ahead,” assesses the company’s president, José Félix.

Current technologies and 5G will coexist, according to TIM, and infrastructure investment to expand the 4G network will continue. The operator aims to reach all Brazilian municipalities with 4th generation Internet by 2023, at the same time as it will activate 5G throughout the country, according to Anatel’s schedule.

Devices with other technologies will continue to function normally, connecting to networks they are compatible with, as well as 5G devices, which will be able to connect to the 4G network where the new frequency signal is not available.

According to the operator, it is not necessary to change the SIM card. The customer only needs one smartphone compatible with new technologies.

Coverage will follow Anatel’s requirements, gradually progressing to all regions. TIM will start covering this Friday (29) in 33 neighborhoods of Porto Alegre.

Vivo informs that, to use 5G, it is enough to have a mobile plan with the operator and a device compatible with the technology. Currently, there are more than 2.5 million customers who already have this condition in the country.

Customers with a 4G chip already have access to 5G. In covered regions, the connection will be automatic and therefore the 5G icon will appear on the device screen. The company has 47 approved devices compatible with 3.5 GHz and 2.3 GHz frequencies.

The operator does not inform the districts, but makes available on the website a map with the coverage area (in purple) by 5G. See below.
