The five pairs competing in the 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 Worlds project an evolution in the upcoming championship races in Nova Scotia, Canada. This Thursday (1st) three regattas took place for all classes.
The World races were contested with free weather, sun and wind which picked up throughout the day, with an average of 8 to 14 knots. Conditions were more stable than the day before, when the event opened, which saw bigger waves and winds above 25 knots.
For the continuation of the world championship in Canadian Halifax, the sailors must find winds in the direction of the north with less waves, which could completely change the strategies of the Brazilian team.
”The global event takes place in the waters of St. Margarets, which generally have consistent moderate to strong winds. Many championships are organized in this region due to the mild climate. The Brazilian team is focused and aware that it can evolve even more in the world championship,” said Marco Aurélio de Sá Ribeiro, president of CBVela – Confederação Brasileira de Vela.
Two-time Olympic champions Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze are seventh at the 49erFX Worlds. The athletes placed 9th, 14th and 14th in today’s races.
With the entry of the worst rejection result, they add up to 47 lost points. The lead continues with the Dutch Odile van Aanholt and Annette Duetz with 9 points lost.
In 49er, with 65 pairs participating in the world championship, the two Brazilians went into the water with the aim of obtaining a better average, since the day before there was only one event.
Marco Grael and Gabriel Borges, double Pan American champions, occupy 44th place after 18th, 17th and 16th.
Dante Bianchi and Thomas Lowbeer are in 56th place after finishing the day’s races in 25th, 24th and 25th. “The expectation is to adapt to a competition of this level. Thomas and I did a big internship there, but since 2019 we haven’t participated in an international dispute, because the pandemic started in 2020,” said Dante Bianchi before the start of the regattas.
”There have been some hardware changes in the class, we will have to experiment to better understand how they will influence the settings. In short, we will try to adapt to an international regatta, with a greater number of boats, more competitive people, in addition to understanding and better adapting to this new equipment.
At Nacra 17, Olympians Samuel Albrecht and Gabriela Nicolino finished the day in 19th position, ahead of João Bulhões and Marina Arndt.
