Canadian Secret Service Investigating Iran Death Threats

The Canadian Secret Service (CSIS) revealed on Friday that it was investigating credible death threats made by Iran against people in Canada, following similar alerts recorded in the United Kingdom.

“CSIS is actively investigating several death threats from the Islamic Republic of Iran, based on reliable information,” the agency’s spokesperson told France-Presse (AFP).

“These hostile activities and foreign interference undermine the security of Canada and Canadians, as well as our democratic values and our sovereignty,” said Eric Balsam.

These investigations take place with the help of international partners, the CSIS spokesperson explained, although he did not provide details.

Canadian intelligence is aware that Iran is monitoring and intimidating people in Canada, including members of the Iranian diaspora, in an effort to “silence those who openly denounce” the regime, he added.

The director of the British foreign information agency MI5, Ken McCallum, denounced on Wednesday that the Islamic Republic of Iran is trying to “abduct or kill” British people, or residents of the United Kingdom, whom it considers as “enemies of the regime”, pointing to the existence of “direct threats”.

The UK agency’s warnings came after the UK government last week accused Iran of issuing death threats against UK-based journalists.

Foreign Minister James Cleverly revealed on Friday via the social network Twitter that he had summoned the head of Iranian diplomacy after journalists working in the United Kingdom received death threats from Iran.

London’s Persian-language television station, Iran International, reported that two of its journalists working in the UK had received death threats from the Islamic Revolutionary Guards (Tehran’s ideological army).

Iran International covers protests that erupted in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini on September 16, three days after her arrest in Tehran by so-called ‘customs police’, who accused her of breaking strict code clothing, “opened the way” to this type of attack.

Iran has denounced foreign interference to incite protests.

According to the non-governmental organization Iran Human Rights (IHR), following the demonstrations, which the Iranian authorities describe as “riots”, the security forces have already arrested more than 15,000 demonstrators.

According to a report published Wednesday by the IHR, at least 342 people were killed in the repression of the protest movement launched on September 16.
