Beach volleyball player Bruno Schmidt, 36, announced his retirement this Sunday (22), during an interview with the show Globe Sports, from Globe TV. Olympic champion at the Rio 2016 Games, teaming up with Alison Mamute, the Espírito Santo athlete has revealed the reason that led him to decide to end his professional sports career.
“I don’t see myself as a top athlete anymore, playing the way I played back then. It hurts a lot, more than defeats, only pain. I don’t see myself like in 2016 anymore. I compare myself to That. The time has come for me,” said Schmidt, who was voted twice as the best player on the World Tour (2015 and 2016).
A benchmark for beach volleyball in the country, the player has already mapped out his future after the court. A law graduate last year, Schmidt wants to use his free time to prepare for the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) exam in February. Only those who pass the assessment can work as a lawyer.
“One of the reasons I quit is to have the time and energy to face this new challenge. I like it, it makes me wake up early the next day, ”said the athlete.
The Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV) also paid tribute to the Olympic champion in a post on Instagram. “Bruno is saying goodbye to the courts today. Your magic gestures will be missed, but the pride and applause are forever! Be happy on the new path, champion! Thank you for everything!”.
