THE Bayern Munich beat Mainz on Wednesday afternoon, 4-0, and qualified for the quarter-finals of the German Cup. The match marked the Bavarian side’s first win of 2023 and the debut of recently signed Portuguese defender João Cancelo from Manchester City.
Julian Nagelsmann’s team had so far drawn four draws in four games played since the start of the year. This time the team had goals from Choupo-Moting, Musiala, Sané and Alphonso Davies to secure the triumph.
Bayern still do not know their opponent in the next round. The definition will only take place after all the confrontations, scheduled to end on February 8. This season, the club will be looking for their 21st title in the competition.
Now Bayern are turning their attention to the German Championship. The team’s next commitment to the tournament will take place next Sunday, at 1:30 p.m. (Brasília time), against Wolfsburg. The team leads the domestic league with 37 points, one ahead of Uniom Berlin in second place.
How were the goals?
Full-back João Cancelo needed just 17 minutes to be involved in a goal for the first time in a Bayern shirt. The Portuguese centered in the feet of Choupo-Moting, inside the small area, which he had difficulty removing from the goalkeeper.
The second goal was scored at 30? of the first time. The young Musiala received a pass at the edge of the area, made a good individual shot and put it in the back of the net. The third happened in the dying minutes of the first leg: Sané was tripped in the box and hit the left corner hard.
Canadian Alphonso Davies was responsible for scoring the fourth and closing the coffin for Mainz. The player rose higher than the defenders after a cross in the area and, with a header, completed the goal, at 38? of the second half.
