Bahia PT president says lack of agrarian reform in the country motivates differences
The president of the Workers’ Party of Bahia (PT-BA), Éden Valadares, commented this Friday (3) on the recent cases of invasion of properties by members of the Movement of Landless Rural Workers (MST) in Bahia.
According to the PT, the mobilization in the Far South aims to protest against the environmental damage caused by the monoculture of eucalyptus in the region. For Eden, social movements have regained the right to demonstrate with the resumption of the democratic environment in Brazil under the Lula administration.
“The Bolsonaro government’s environment of persecution of indigenous peoples, family farmers and quilombolas has not allowed social movements to take up this agenda, which is a protest agenda, not an agenda to reclaim land. It is a legitimate protest agenda and totally linked to the challenges of the environment of the 21st century. In the specific case of farms in the Far South, it is a question of drawing attention to the crisis of delinquency. environmental, and it is up to the government of President Lula , to Minister Paulo Teixeira to mediate these interests or having this contradiction, I think everything in the greater democratic normality, ”said Eden.
The president of the Bahian PT also said that the absence of agrarian reform in the country motivates the differences.
“There is an agrarian conflict in secular Brazil regarding the lack of historical land reform in Brazil – almost every other country in America has produced some type of land reform that democratizes access to their lands, even the United States and Canada, and in Brazil it is not the case. . So, it is perhaps the country with the largest number of large domains in the Americas”, he concluded.
So maybe Brazil is the country with the most great estates on the continent.
