Striker Tiago Coimbra, who recently terminated his contract with Palmeiras, was announced as a new signing for Canada’s Halifax Wanderers FC on Wednesday (14). The 18-year-old, who has dual nationality and plays for the Canadian national under-20 team, has signed a contract with the new club until the end of 2024, with an option to renew for a further season .
The 18-year-old striker arrived at Palmeiras last year to play for the Under-17 side, where he made 11 appearances and scored four goals. In 2022, Canada was promoted to the Under-20 team but didn’t get a good streak and only played two games.
Tiago Coimbra has dual citizenship and also plays for the Canadian national team base. In June this year, the striker played in the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship. Before, he had already been called up by the country in April, to play friendly matches in Costa Rica.
Who is Tiago “Canada”?
Born in Fortaleza-CE, Tiago lived outside Brazil from age 9 to 16. The striker played for Faly Academy Soccer, a soccer academy in Canada. He also lived in the United States.
In 2020, the striker returned to Brazil and passed through the Juazeiro base, in Fortaleza-CE. Tiago took part in the Aldeia Cup, a grassroots championship in Recife, and caught the eye of a scout from Palmeiras, who recommended him for a trial at Alviverde.
The 17-year-old went through an evaluation period at the Palmeiras base, was approved and signed a contract. For the football dream, the striker left his family in Canada to play in Brazil.
