Actress Who Plays Mônica Was Almost a Marvel Heroine: Giulia Benite Recalls ‘Secret’ Trials

Giulia Benite said she had already carried out major international tests – but the process was super secret.

In Brazil, Giulia Benite has already become the face of one of the most beloved characters in fiction, but did you know that the actress who played Mônica in Turma’s films and series almost made her Marvel debut in 2022? On Twitter, the 14-year-old artist revealed that she had already done some international tests in her career and caught the attention of her followers by sharing that she had participated in a super “secret” selection for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

On the network, Giulia said she auditioned without even knowing who would star in the film and found out from a detail while watching the feature film with Benedict Cumberbatch. “I only found out that I tested for America [Chavez] when I recognized in the movie one of the scenes I did in the test. During the process they didn’t even tell me who the character was,” he wrote.

The role of America Chavez ended up with 16-year-old Canadian actress Xochitl Gomez. The character first appeared in the comics in 2011 and is part of the Young Avengers, which is also set to be explored in the studio’s cinematic universe in theaters soon.

In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, we see the teenager accompanying the wizard Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) in different realities, thanks to his particular ability to teleport between the multiverses. Originally, America is blessed with super strength and a sense that allows her to identify problems in other universes.

Blind tests, such as Giulia Benite fact, are common practice in the casting process for large productions. We recently had another Brazilian example: Bruna Marquezine said she auditioned to play heroine Supergirl in the DC movie The Flash, which hits theaters in June. “You get scenes without any context. I didn’t know what movie it was for, I didn’t even know the character. They don’t talk,” the actress said in an interview with PodDelas podcast.

The role in The Flash ended up with American actress Sasha Calle, but Bruna Marquezine also found her way to DC and will play Penny, one of the main characters in Blue Beetle, which hits theaters in August.

Giulia Benite auditioned for the new Disney series

On Twitter, Giulia also said that she participated in a test for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, a Disney + series, adapted from the literary work of Rick Riordan. “I was dying to audition for PJO [Percy Jackson e os Olimpianos], but I thought the registration was already closed, until one day my agent sent me a message saying that she had organized an international test for me. When I went to see him it was for PJO including he said it was for Anna,” he wrote.
