With three Coldplay shows and a schedule already closed for performances by Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Weeknd and RBD, Nilton Santos Stadium – home of Botafogo – has definitely entered the mega-event route in Rio de Janeiro.

With the installation of synthetic turf, the stadium has greater availability of events without interfering with Botafogo matches.

Nilton Santos enters the “void” left by Maracanã, which after the departure of Odebrecht has greatly reduced the number of events with the provisional administration of the Fla-Flu duo.

“To get an idea and taking the Coldplay concerts as an example, if the grass were natural we would have to completely replace around 30% of it and recover the rest, which would compromise the performance of the games. With artificial grass , the pitch is available for play immediately after the show, requiring just a little maintenance treatment,” says Alexandre Costa, Director of Infrastructure and Operations at Nilton Santos.

The concerts already defined in the stadium

– Coldplay: the British rock band performed last weekend at the stadium (25 and 26) and will give a last concert today Tuesday (28).

– The Weeknd: The Canadian singer will perform on October 7th.

– Red Hot Chili Peppers: the famous American rock band will play at the Nilton Santos on November 4th.

– RBD: the Mexican band, which is a hit with teenage audiences, will perform at the stadium on 10 and 11 November.

Text approval

Nilton Santos Director of Infrastructure and Operations Alexandre Costa gave an interview to UOL and spoke about the involvement of John Textor, owner of SAF Botafogo.

Approval

“All decisions made at SAF Botafogo go through the approval of John Textor, and this, being a strategic management decision, could not be different.”

The objective is to become a reference

“What we showed him was the enormous potential of the stadium to become a reference place to organize great concerts in Rio de Janeiro”.

No split ball with FAS

“At SAF Botafogo, there are no split balls. There are strategic decisions in which everyone is involved, all the pros and cons are analyzed and, once the decision is made, we are all aligned and in the same direction”.

Football is at the center of decisions

“Botafogo is a football club and football will always be at the center of all our decisions, but everyone has the perception that clubs today need to find alternative sources of income and the exploitation of the stadium is an axis important”.

Billing quote

“There is and is a relevant revenue line in the SAF Botafogo budget, but out of respect for all parties involved, we are not disclosing numbers. It is important to understand that revenue from a show is not only the rental of space, but a series of businesses involved which are operated, such as parking, catering, the sale of hospitality packages, etc. In addition to the enhancement of other stadium assets, such as the boxes, sponsorships, etc.

synthetic grass

“The installation of the new synthetic turf has been defined with very active participation from the football department, as well as all decisions regarding the schedule of matches and concerts”.

Location available immediately after the show

“To get an idea and taking the Coldplay concerts as an example, if the grass were natural we would have to completely replace around 30% of it and recover the rest, which would compromise the performance of the games. With artificial grass , the pitch is available for play immediately after the show, requiring just a little maintenance treatment.

Other improvements

“SAF Botafogo has made improvements to the structure of Nilton Santos. In addition to the pitch, we have already renovated the main dressing room and are also making progress in the press room, box structure, support rooms, among other. other improvements in stadium coverage and other needs”.

End of the athletics track and approach the bleachers

“Any structural intervention in the Nilton Santos stadium requires authorization from the city of Rio de Janeiro. There is no dispute between SAF Botafogo and the city of Rio. On the contrary, there is close collaboration and permanent dialogue on the future of the stadium, the Botafogo concession and the need to adapt the stadium to the needs of Botafogo”.

“John Textor’s desire to bring the stands and the public closer to the field is public. Any solution in this area requires, in addition to the authorization of the Town Hall, an in-depth study of architecture and engineering and involves a significant investment by SAF Botafogo. , therefore, decisions that take your time and will never be made in a timely manner”.

new shows

“Yes, there are discussions for other big show dates, which will be revealed in due course.”

Curiosities

In addition to Nilton Santos, Rio de Janeiro currently has the Olympic Park, Praça da Apoteose and Jeunesse Arena for major events.

RBD’s second show at Nilton Santos will take place on the same date as the Libertadores final, which will be held at the Maracanã. (Bruno Braz and Alexandre Araújo/Folhapress)
