A Canadian journalist and two Brazilians who were recording a documentary are attacked in a land conflict zone in MS
A person living in the area recorded the moment the team was surrounded by a group of 30 people armed with knives and guns.
“They threw me to the ground, threw him to the other side. They started kicking him. Anyway, it became an extremely violent situation. And , at the same time as they raped us, others stole all our belongings. “They took the cameras, our work equipment, our documents, our phones, everything,” says anthropologist Carol Mira.
Anthropologist Carol Mira, Canadian photojournalist Renaud Philippe and forest engineer Renato Galata have been present in Mato Grosso do Sul for around three years, producing a documentary on the land conflict between the Guarani Kaiowá indigenous people and rural producers.
This Wednesday (22), they learned of the existence of a conflict in an indigenous community of Iguatemi and decided to go there to register, but before arriving they were surprised by the attackers.
At the police station, Renaud Philippe showed the bruises on his body. He told police the men were wearing masks and it was very dangerous to be there and all of a sudden they started hitting them and stealing their equipment.
“The National Force was already in the region the same day, right? And the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples continues to monitor, through the Department of Mediation and Conflict Conciliation, so that we can now guarantee this security to the journalists who were there to return to their state.
The Federal Police indicated that they had carried out investigations in the area near the village and that the investigation was now in the hands of the Civil Police.
