“Segredos do Putumayo”, a documentary directed by Aurélio Michiles, is available on the main digital rental platforms in the country (see details below). The film went through several important festivals, such as Hot Docs and Vancouver Intl Film Festival (Canada), Galway Film Fleadh and Foyle Film Festival (Ireland), Rencontres du Cinéma Latino-Américain (France), AFI DOCS (USA), Festival of Ciné de Lima (Peru), among others.
The documentary chronicles the investigations led by Irish activist Roger Casement, then British consul in Brazil, into the enslavement and murder of thousands of indigenous people forced to work collecting rubber. In the film, Casement’s voice is performed by actor Stephen Rea (from “V for Vendetta”, “Interview with the Vampire” and “Breakfast”, for which he was nominated for an Oscar in 1993 in the category ” Best actor”).
“More than a century after the tragic events experienced by the indigenous peoples of Putumayo, linked to the extraction of rubber, an insidious assault on human rights and against those who dare to defend indigenous peoples persists. Here in Brazil, according to the authorities responsible, in May 2022, 19 activists had already been assassinated,” says Aurélio Michiles.
The documentary is available on the following digital platforms: Google Play, Youtube Filmes, Apple (Itunes), Vivo Play and Claro TV+. Digital rental prices should be viewed on streaming services.
