After hitting the tracks during the official test period, Felipe Drugovich could take part in the first Formula 1 race of his career.

This Sunday (26), the Aston Martin team announced that it had chosen the Brazilian to compete alongside Fernando Alonso in the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The sporting event is expected to take place next weekend (March 3-5).

The driver’s participation, however, depends on Lance Stroll not recovering from injury.

“The team will continue to give Lance every chance to race as he recovers from his injury. If he is unable to compete, Felipe Drugovich will drive the AMR23 alongside Fernando Alonso,” said published Aston Martin, on social networks.

The Canadian fractured both wrists after being involved in a cycling accident. With that, the son of the Aston Martin owner did not take part in the pre-season.

Felipe Drugovich pre-season results

The reigning Formula 2 champion took to the tracks on Days 1 and 3 of pre-season. Felipe Drugovich was 14th fastest on day one.

The Brazilian’s best time was 1:34.564. The sportsman born in Maringá completed 40 laps.

The third day result was better. The competitor from Aston Martin is in 10th place. He clocked 1:32.075 and completed 77 laps.

Aston Martin considered four-time F1 champion

Despite having Felipe Drugovich and Stoffel Vandoorne as immediate reserves, the British team considered bringing Sebastian Vettel home.

The German has four F1 titles in his career but retired from racing at the end of last year after competing for his own Aston Martin.

In an interview after the third and final day of testing, team boss Mike Krack admitted to being in constant contact with Vettel.

“I’ve had a few phone calls with him. But it’s happened in the past and will continue in the future,” he said.
