Miami (USA) – Big names in Brazilian singles tennis today, Beatriz Haddad Maia and Thiago Monteiro will play on the same court this Saturday in Miami. Bia plays at noon, for the opener of the women’s third round, while Monteiro plays just after for the second leg of the men’s tournament. Matches will take place in the Grandstand, the complex’s second largest arena.
Number 1 in Brazil and 14th in the world, Bia meets the Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, ranked 22nd. The left-hander from São Paulo is looking for an unprecedented victory on the circuit, after three victories for her rival in previous duels. Thiago Monteiro, 81st in the ranking, challenges the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, world number 6, who won the two meetings between them, at the US Open 2020 and at Wimbledon last year.
The day will feature Brazilian doubles debut, with Luísa Stefani, Marcelo Melo, Marcelo Demoliner and Bia Haddad Maia herself.
Among the other highlights, the duel between the Kazakh Elena Rybakina and the Spaniard Paula Badosa. Despite Badosa leading the historic 4-2, Rybakina got the better of Indian Wells last week. North Americans Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, as well as three-time champion Victoria Azarenka will also be on the court.
On the men’s side, culmination for the debuts of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev. The Greek will face the French Richard Gasquet, while the Russian will be challenged by the Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena.
